Abstract

The problem of household organic waste that has not been optimally managed remains a challenge in realizing a clean and sustainable environment. Most people still dispose of or burn organic waste without utilizing its economic and ecological potential. This activity aims to increase public knowledge, skills, and awareness in utilizing organic waste into compost through a participatory-based training program. This activity is a community service research with a descriptive approach. The subjects of the activity consisted of 30 participants from the local community and were actively involved in the entire training series. Data collection was carried out through observation, interviews, documentation, and distribution of questionnaires before and after the training. The research instruments used included observation sheets, interview guidelines, knowledge and skills questionnaires, and activity documentation. Data were analyzed using quantitative and qualitative descriptive analysis techniques to describe changes in participant knowledge, skills, and participation after attending the training. The results of the activity showed that the average level of participant knowledge increased from 68.5% before the training to 89.7% after the training, while the level of participant skills in making compost reached 86.3%. Furthermore, 90% of participants were able to practice the composting process independently, and 93.3% demonstrated a commitment to implementing organic waste management in their respective communities. It can be concluded that the training on utilizing organic waste into compost is effective in increasing community capacity in environmentally-based waste management. The implication of this activity is the development of a community empowerment model that can support organic waste reduction and strengthen sustainable environmental practices.
